Barn Burning

In this story, a man named Mr. Snokes is being sued for burning Mr. Harrison's barn. Even though Mr. Harrison has no proof that he did it, the judge knows that he burnt the barn anyway, he tells him to take his wagon, get out of the country before dark, and dismisses the case. When Mr. Snokes and his son leave the court room, he hits him in the face, and tells him to get in the wagon harshly. When they loaded their bags on to their wagon, and reached their new house, Mr. Snokes tells his son that they will be back at the court tomorrow. The next day, Mr. Snokes goes to court for the second time for messing his dirty feet on Mr. Harrison's hundred dollar rug, and wants him to pay it back with twenty bushels of corn. When it's the judges turn to make his decision, he decides that Mr. Snokes should pay for the rug with ten bushels of corn instead of twenty. When they reach home, Mr. Snokes orders his son to fetch him some oil, when he brings it back, the father gets angry at him for not sending a black person to get it. Instead of hitting him, he tells his wife to hold him down while goes to fetch something. When he leaves, the boy struggles until he breaks free, and escapes his house without looking back.
