Symbols in "The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorn

I bet you are wondering, what is the symbol in this story. Well, let's talk about the symbol. In this short story, Mr. Hooper, was the minister in a wedding, but he was wearing a black veil. Not very good with a wedding, because a wedding is is a happy moment. Not a sad moment. This veil starts a discussion over why he is wearing this veil. When there was a funeral, and he let the dead young girl "see" his face. Afterwords, some people "saw" him walking hand and hand with the dead girl. It was appropriate on that context, but not at a wedding. In my literature class, we thought he was hiding sin because of this funeral moment. We thought he had been cheating on his fiancée with this young girl. The main topic of this story and in the story is the black veil. That is why the symbol is the black veil. At the end it says,
"Father Hooper's breath heaved; it rattled in his throat; but, with a mighty effort, grasping forward with his hands, he caught hold of life, and held it back till he should speak. He even raised himself in bed; and there he sat, shivering with the arms of death around him, while the black veil hung down, awful at that last moment, in the gathered terrors of a lifetime. And yet the faint, sad smile, so often there, now seemed to glimmer from its obscurity, and linger on Father Hooper's lips.

"Why do you tremble at me alone?" cried he, turning his veiled face round the circle of pale spectators. "Tremble also at each other! Have men avoided me, and women shown no pity, and children screamed and fled, only for my black veil? What, but the mystery which it obscurely typifies, has made this piece of crape so awful? When the friend shows his inmost heart to his friend; the lover to his best beloved; when man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his Creator, loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his sin; then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I have lived, and die! I look around me, and, lo! on every visage a Black Veil!"

While his auditors shrank from one another, in mutual affright, Father Hooper fell back upon his pillow, a veiled corpse, with a faint smile lingering on the lips. Still veiled, they laid him in his coffin, and a veiled corpse they bore him to the grave. The grass of many years has sprung up and withered on that grave, the burial stone is moss-grown, and good Mr. Hooper's face is dust; but awful is still the thought that it mouldered beneath the Black Veil!"

That is why I think that the symbol is the black veil, and why I think that.

Stolen Party

This story is saying that everything is not always what it seems to be. It says that people can easily be taken advantage of and mistreated just because of what society class you are in. Its says that people demean you and degrade you just based on your background, history, and family. This story starts up your brain and makes it think critically about all the prejudice and discrimination that going on the during the 21st century. Stolen Party push me to prove all the people who think that just because I am Jamaican that I will never amount to anything wrong. I will do this by getting a good job and making something out of myself so I can go back and show then that they were stereotypical and wrong

The Stolen Party

The short story "The Stolen Party"is about a nine year old girl named Rosaura is going to her best friend,Luciana's birthday party. But Rosaura's mom is the maid for Luciana and her family. Rosaura's mom tries to tell her that shes not going for fun she is only going to help with the party, but she did not want to listen to her mom. so Rosaura went to the party despite her moms warning. When she approached Luciana's door step one of her cousins would not let Rosaura into the party. The reason she would let her in is because she said that she knew all of Luciana's friends but she has never met her. The reason she has never met her is because Luciana did not want her cousin to know that she hung out with these type of people. But she got in by kicking Lucian`s cousin in the shin, when no one was looking. When she got to the party she had the time of her life, but when the party was over, Senora Ines gave her money for all of her assistance. Then Rosaura realized that her mother was right Luciana was not her real friend, she was just nice to her.

"The Stolen Party"

The title of this story is very meaningful. This title means, that the party was "stolen" from Rosaura. This is because Rosaura expected that she would have an incredible time, thinking she was Luciana's "friend", but instead she discovered that she was just there to help Senora Ines. They took advantage of her being the maid's daughter. Also, Rosaura expected to recieve gifts or presents from Luciana becuase she was rich. Instead, she received two dollar bills for her HELP! Rosaura's mother was right, Rosaura was only the "maid's daughter" to Luciana. Which probably filled Rosaura with anger. As a reader, I could predict that Rosaura went home and cried her eyes out, for being so naive and actually thinking that Luciana was her friend. Then, its possible that Rosaura cried even longer and louder when she remembered Luciana's cousin, the one with the bow.

The irony of "The Stole Party"

In the short story "The Stolen Party", written by, Liliana Heker has irony because a girl named Rosura was going to a so called "friends" party but ends up working at the party without finding out until she left. This all stated when he told her mom she was going to her best friends party. Rosura's mom worked for Rosuras best friend as a maid because her best friend (lucian) is rich and Rosura's mom new that Luciana was going to use Rosura to help with the serving of the food and thing like that but she didn't believe her and she thought that she was lying. When she got to the party Luciana's cousin stopped Rosura because Luciana's cousin know all of of her friends. At the party she won all the games and was the magicians assistant but she also surved the kids cake and she was payed instead of getting a yo yo or bracelet like the other kids and she didn't find out until she left.
There was a great deal of irony in Liliana Hecker's"The Stolen Party". Rosaura was going to a party because her so called friend invited her. She was so naive she went even when her mother warned her that they might use her. When she went to the party, she was so happy to be there. She was dressed up and her was all nice. They tell her that she could be the magicians assistant and they let her serve the cake. Then at the end, when Senora Ines was passing out prizes to all of Luciana, Rosaura's friend, friends, instead of giving a prize she received money. That were the irony cones in. You probably excepted that she get a prize for coming but she got money. Why? Because Rosaura's mom was a maid. That's why she passed the cake and was an assistant and was payed actual money, because they were using her as a maid, just like her mom. To sum it all up, you expected Rosaura to have a good time and get a prize, but it turned it that she was being used.

The Stolen Party "Irony"

The Stolen Party shows a great level of irony through Rosaura and Luiciana. Their "friendship" was part of the irony because Rosaura thought she was her best friend but ironically Luciana was using their friendship so Rosaura can do most of the work. Like cleaning up and throwing out the cups etc. Actually, her mother warned her about this happening but Rosaura was so sure they were friends she didn't even worry about it. Her mother said that don't trust rich people, their liars. So Rosuara was definitely warned before she eve got ready to go, so she had time to stop and not go but she still went.
Evidence to support that Luciana was using Rosuara as a maid is towards the end of the story. While she was at the party she served the cake thinking that everyone would like her because of this. But their using her. Who goes to a party that's not yours and you serve the cake? I've personally never done that before. I don't understand how she didn't catch in to this. She was probably so excited to go she wasn't even thinking about it. This proves people aren't true friends. No matter how much you like people, some aren't true friends. This story made me think about who my friends are and if their using me for anything. Now every time I make a new friend i'll be sure to see what's really going on. To see what I'm not thinking. Poor Rosuara, when she grows up I hope she doesn't fall into this trap again.

My Reflections On Edgar Allen Poe's Statement Of "The Black Minister's Black Veil"by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Edgar Allan Poe speculated that Minister Hooper may have had an affair with the young lady who died at the beginning of the story, as this is the first day he wears the veil, "and that a crime of dark dye, (having reference to the young lady) has been committed, is a point which only minds congenial with that of the author will perceive."
- bookrags.com & Wikipanion application

I agree with Poe because taken the setting of this story which is a highly religious Pilgrim town, you would have to be insane to walk aroung in public with a black veil hiding your face. All of the clergy and church members were whispering among each other " Minister Hooper has gone mad!" The young lady may have caused him to wear this veil but as Mr.Mcnamar stated "Just because Poe said it does not mean it is true."

Babylon Revisited

A theme of Scott F. Fitzgerald short story "Babylon Revisited" is that your consequences to your actions can sometimes be severe. Your actions can have severe consequences is the theme because Charlie regrets of being reckless three years ago. He illustrates this theme through Charlie's actions of trying to make better of what he had done to deserve unhappiness. He used to be irresponsible and immature because in the story " he had actually, in his immature years, stolen a tricycle and pedaled Lorraine all over Étoile between the small hours of dawn", (Fitzgerald12)," We tried to call the president",( Fitzgerald11) when he was engaged with his wife. He didn't take controll or realize what had happened when his wife was dead and his daughter was taken away from his care. After his wife was dead his sister-in-law hated him because she accused him of taking part of her sisters death. So when Charlie returned she didn't want to hear him and did't trust him when he said that he had changed. In the story it said" her response was more frankly tepid, though she minimized her expression of unalterable distrust by directing her regard toward his child", (Fitzgerald3).

Uncle Rock

In the story "Uncle Rock", it talks about a boy named Erick who has to deal with his mom finding a man to take care of them .The story tells us that Erick is a quiet boy who does not talk, and he is always dealing with men who want to go on a date with his mom. From reading this story, I can predict that Erick is annoyed with it, and he may be jealous because his mom pays more attention to the men than him. However, the mom talks to men with elegant suits on, because she assumes they are wealthy, from what they wear. Anyways, at the end of the store, a man named Rock takes Erick and his mother to a baseball game. The mother knows that Rock isn't wealthy, but she likes him anyways because he takes really good care of her. So, at the baseball game a lot of interesting events go on. First, Erick catches a baseball, then men from the team tells Erick to give them the ball so they can sign it for him. After they signed the ball for Erick he told Erick to give a note to his mom. After Erick thinks about what he's going to do, he realizes that Rock isn't the most wealthiest man his mother has gone out with, but in the end he treats her with respect and dignity. In the end Erick decides not to give the note to his mother, and he decided to speak up.

Babylon Revisited

In this story, a young man named Charlie suffers from the loss of his wife, and decides his daughter Honoria should come live with him. When Marion finds out he wants to raise her, she throws a fit and reminds him of how he locked her sister and she came knocking on her door; soaked to the skin and shivering. Charlie does admit that he did some terrible things in the past, and is willing to change his life for Honoria to be happy.

When Charlie woke up the next day, he was in a great mood, until he remembered the plans he and his wife Helen made. Instead of staying in bed and weeping over the loss of his wife, he rolled out of bed and went to the apartment. At the apartment, Charlie and Marion were having a conversation until Duncan and Loraine came in laughing all of a sudden. When they finally had control over themselves, they asked if Charlie would like to go out to eat. When Charlie said he couldn't, Loraine's voice became unpleasant and decided to leave. As soon as they left, Charlie grew furious and began to yell. When he was finished, he sat back down and thought about his family. He wanted his child, and nothing was good except that fact.

"Uncle Rock"

In the story " Uncle Rock" a child named Erick goes through important changes in the story that helps him choose right from wrong and find happiness with something that isn't the best of things but will bring happiness in the long run in his life and his mothers.
In " Uncle Rock" in the beginning of the story Erick is a child who doesn't really care about his mother because he is really passive about the men she chooses to bring into their lives even though he knows those men will only last for so long before they walk out of his and his mothers life. As the story progresses you can sense a change in Erick's passiveness towards his mothers choice of men when one of his mothers boyfiends leaves her and "Uncle Rock" enters the story. At first Erick's feelings toward "Uncle Rock" were very limited mainly just uncaring because he feels that Rock is just another guy his mom is "befriending"; a nobody. Until one day Rock took interest in Erick's liking to baseball and decided to take him and his mother to a ball game were one of the players took interest in Erick's mother and at that point Erick realized how much fun and happiness Rock was bringing to him and his mother that he decided to be an active roll in bringing happiness into him and his mothers life that he threw away the paper the baseball player gave to him to give to his mother because he knew from his mothers past relationship with men who had money that the relationship would just end in heart break and unhappiness.

Barn Burning " Theme"

A theme of Williams Faulkner's short story "Barn Burning" is loyalty. Loyalty to one's family is still more important than standing up for what is right. He illustrates this theme through two conflicts.
The first conflict was when the boy, the father, and the white were at court. They were at court because the white man stepped in horse droppings and went to Colonel Sartoris Snopes, the boy, house and wiped it In his rug. The next day the white man's barn was burned and the only person he suspected was the father. When their in court the boy has a conflict. He has to choose whether he should tell the truth about his dad burning down the bran or lying and sticking up for his dad. It says, "That evening a strange nigger came with the dollar and got the hog. He was a strange nigger." He said, " He say to tell you and hay kin burn." I said, "What?" "That night my barn burned I got the stock out but I lost the barn." (Faulkner 1)
Another conflict would be how the father abuses his child in a multiple amount of times. He has beaten him repeatedly. The boy was so sick and tired of being basically being tormented that he made a decision to run away. It says, "I'll hold him. "See you do then." "Lemme go,I I don't want to have to hit you." "Let him go!" "If he don't go, before God, I am going up there myself." "Don't you see I can't.?" "Sarty! Sarty! Sarty! No! No! No! Help me Lizzie." (Faulkner 10) Then he was free. When the Aunt said, let him go she thought he was going to his room. She didn't know he was running away. The child showed loyalty to the loyal principles because his father was wrong.

Barn Burning

I'm reading a story called "Barn Burning", and it's mainly about a boy who has a father that burns barns, and one day the boy decides to tell on his father. The characters are Abner, Colonel, the older brother, the twin sisters, the mother, the aunt, and De Spain. The main characters are Colonel and Abner. Colonel is Abner's son,and Abner is abusive. Abner's actions shows that he is demanding and abusive. He's demanding because he raises his voice at people, so they can do things for him. He's abusive because he hits Colonel several times, just because he does things Abner doesn't find suitable.
On the other hand, I found a quotation that shows Colonel he's a follower. He's a follower because he does bad things for his dad. The quotation read : " Go to the barn and go get that can of oil we were oiling the wagon with," Abner said. The boy did not move. Then he could speak. " What ....." he cried, " What are you......" " Go get the oil," his father said. " Go!" When I read this, I saw that Colonel is a follower because he did something bad, just because his father told him to do it. It was a bad thing he did because he went to get the oil so his father could burn down the barn.
I found another quotation that shows Abner being demanding. The quotation read: " Did you put the cutter back in that straight stock like I told you?" " No sir." the boy said. " Then go do it." After I read this, I realized that the father told his son to go put the cutter back in the stock, but it was his job to do it. Also, he said it in a demanding voice like he had nothing to do with the tool.

In the short story "Uncle Rock", shows how you have to protect your family, even if the person who is about to hurt your family can bring you great things. I think this because the baseball player could of ruined Uncle Rock and the mother's lives. At least that was what he thought. He knew it would be cool to have a baseball player as dad and have all the cool stuff, but he liked Uncle Rock. He didn't want jeopardize their relationship so he threw the paper away.He knew it would've been selfish of him to give his mom the paper, even if is mom refused. He wont ANYONE stand in the way of his relationships. Hes caring. He focuses on the family not the money and the cool stuff. Uncle Rock might only be a engineer, but he was caring, he would stay home unlike a professional baseball player, who be on the run everyday.

"Barn Burning" Literary Analysis

The actions that happen in this story are that Sortories was beaten by his father, who is the barn burner. The reason I know this because it says "His father struck him with the flat of his hand on the side of the head, hard but without heat, exactly as he had struck the two mules at the store..." (pg 7). The conflicts that occur are his father burns barns and tracked manure on an $100 rug.

The narrator is the author, William Faulkner. The tones I hear Faulkner use change depending on what is happening in that part of the story. Some examples are: "Does it hurt?" "Naw." "Hit don't hurt. Lemme be." "Can't you wipe some of the blood before hit drys?" "I'll wash to-night. Lemme be." ( pg. 2-3) The tone changes as it goes back and forth from his mother to him. She's being loving and caring, but he's being rude and disrespectful.

The symbol Faulkner uses is Major de Spain's white, clean, $100 rug. This is because the father wipes manure and ruined the rug while washing it. because of this he loses 20 bushels of corn from his pay because he is a sharecropper. All this is because it says, " ... his father raise from the ground a flattish fragment of feildstone and examined it and returned to the pot." ( pg 6)

"Barn Burning" Literary Analysis

Barn Burning, by William Faulkner, describes a boy whom comes from an abusive father and the post Civil War time era. Knowing this information, we can predict that this boy, Sarty probably doesn't enjoy his life and suffers. The conflict inc;uded in the story is that Sarty's father burned someones rug and for that reason Sarty and his family have been deported. Saty's father bosses around Sarty as if he were a slave. Mr.Snopes, also known as Sarty's father, not only abuses Sarty but abuses Sarty's mother as well.

Though, Sarty was hurt and bleeding, Mr.Snopes continued to be demanding and careless. "Get back in the wagon." (Faulkner, 2). He tends to be arrogant and demanding often times, " Get out of my way nigger." (Faulkner, 5). He displays arrogance when talking to "niggers" or perhaps even his own son! Its sad that his own son probably cannot even say something decently "nice" about his own father.

"The constellations wheeled on." (Faulkner, 10). This statement describes his freeness. this is predicted because, stars are described as free. When we see stars in the sky, we wish we were as free as they were. This has connection with the story because, once Sarty ran away from his home, he didn't know what to do. But his feelings were so tangled that in a way he began to feel free.

Barn Burning By William Faulkner- Reflections On Classroom Discussion

The thoughts and questions that "popped" into my head while reading this story were very different from the statements and questions in class. I discovered through our group discussion that in fact the " barn burner" was a Caucasian man. My first instinct was that he was African-American because the woman who's barn burned down kept shouting the n-word at him (or at least I thought it was him.)" He was a strange nigger, I tell you. I don't know what became of him." (Faulkner 1) What also changed my perspective of the story was that a white family was poor! This is post Civil War era and from the previous pieces of literature I have read, one would suspect that every Caucasian family is filthy rich.

From my prospective I was rugged on the father's attitude towards his family."Do like I told you." ( Faulkner 10) The father treated them with as little of respect as an African-American from the year eighteen-sixty two. The little boy is terrified of his father throughout the story even though that is his own flesh and blood. If Colonel( the little boy) even makes it to his adulthood he will be terrified and traumatized as Shannelle pointed out reliving all those years of physical and emotional abuse. The father never treated anyone else in the family like this , just Colonel.

This short story is ironic because throughout the story the boy was loyal to his Father as Mr.Mcnamar stated but just at the very end he decides to break the trust and tells the Justice that his father is in fact the barn burner. "The boy said nothing to the Justice." (Faulkner 1)This made question "well why" then I answered my own question: Colonel broke the trust to get back at his father for all those harsh years of abuse, or he probably wasn't fond of the idea of lying.

The Set Up in "The Secret Life of Walter Middy"

The set up in "The Secret Life of Walter Middy" is different than what normal text is. Why is there different writing than usual? There is day dreams and normal text. The story starts with a day dream. He is a brave, smart Commander doing through the ocean. Some reasons he is brave is because it says, " The old man will get us through," they said to one another."Then it goes to Mrs. Middy saying, "Not so fast! You're driving to fast! "said Mrs. Middy." What are you driving so fast for?"" Then it goes on to "It's the millionaire banker, Wellington McMillan." And it goes on to reality and back to the day dreams again and again. The punctuation that separates the day dreams to reality is the ELIPSE ( ... ).

Barn Burn

Barn Burn,byWilliam Faulker is about the main character a boy,and his family. He his mother, father, older brother, and his two sisters. His father is proud, prideful, independent, individual he also speaks with conviction without looking at the facts. When his father went to court for burning a barn,he aimed for him to tell a lie.The jjudge knew that he was guilty but he couldn't only go with his visceral (gut feeling),so he tells him"take your wagon and get out of this country before dark'',(2 Faulkner). When they were outside, his father hit him in the face two times his mother tried to help him up but his father screamed at her for doing so.After that depressing moment,he told him to''Get in the wagon''harshly,(2 Faulkner). When they were on there quest, his father endup stepping on horse manure and in anger he wipes it on a white rug. When the owner came back,he was full of rage. The next day he went to court, and he was sued twenty bushels of corns against his crop. His son tried to comfort him by saying "If he wanted it hit done different why didn't he wait and tell you how?'',(7 Faulkner). At the end he escape doing labor for his father's mistake, but while he ran without looking back,he heard gun shots and he thought about his parents.

The symbol in "Barn Burning"

Wiliam Faulkner is making a point on symbolism in the story "Barn Burning". The specific piont he is making is about the symbol (the rug). The symbol in "Barn Burning", written by William Faulkner, is the white rug in Major de Spain's house. The rug symbolizes the wealth of people in that time like de Spain. Snopes stepped in fresh horse droppings and walked to de Spain's house. A black butler answered the door and Snopes said, "Get out of my way, nigger", and walked into the house. Snopes was a sharecropper.

He felt like an unsuperior man in his life because he was a sharecropper, so answered the door like that way to feel superior because the black buttler couldn't do anything. When he was inside he purposely walked all over the house in his messy shoe to dirty up the hundred dollar carpet. Back in the early 1900s people had a hard time trying to get one hunderd dollars, so to use it on a rug meant de Spain was wealthy. A woman said "Will you plaese go away", and Snopes said nothing for a moment then smeared his foot in a circle on the white rug.

Symbolicly Snopes was saying that since wealthy people like de Spain are so rich he should hate them. That ended up having a negative efect. De Spain rolled up the rug, and sent it to Snopes. Snopes washed the rug then rolled it back up and sent it back to de Spain. Then de Spain charged Snopes twenty bushels of the crops he earned from being a sharecropper. That ment that his family would go hungy, so she said to his son, "Go to the barn and get that can of oil we were oiling the wagon with" and burned down de Spain's barn.

Barn Burning

In this story, a man named Mr. Snokes is being sued for burning Mr. Harrison's barn. Even though Mr. Harrison has no proof that he did it, the judge knows that he burnt the barn anyway, he tells him to take his wagon, get out of the country before dark, and dismisses the case. When Mr. Snokes and his son leave the court room, he hits him in the face, and tells him to get in the wagon harshly. When they loaded their bags on to their wagon, and reached their new house, Mr. Snokes tells his son that they will be back at the court tomorrow. The next day, Mr. Snokes goes to court for the second time for messing his dirty feet on Mr. Harrison's hundred dollar rug, and wants him to pay it back with twenty bushels of corn. When it's the judges turn to make his decision, he decides that Mr. Snokes should pay for the rug with ten bushels of corn instead of twenty. When they reach home, Mr. Snokes orders his son to fetch him some oil, when he brings it back, the father gets angry at him for not sending a black person to get it. Instead of hitting him, he tells his wife to hold him down while goes to fetch something. When he leaves, the boy struggles until he breaks free, and escapes his house without looking back.

"The Hills"

This short story is about a couple who is In the Ebro River Valley of Madrid, Spain. They are visiting these hills and the main character jig ,says the hills look like white elephants. She says this because she is pregnant and the man she is with wants her to het abortion but she does not know what to do. Jig says just like white elephants children are a burden, but they can also give you a family. As Jig and the man she is with get ready to board the train he asked Jig one more time do you feel better and she said " I feel fine". The tone in this story was hard for me to find because the characters went from angry to sad to happy. But throughout the whole story I think that Jig mostly felt angry because the man she was with really wanted her to get abortion.

A&P

I believe that a&p is a complex story. It pulls you in two different directions when it come to what you believe. The story makes you think deeper about what you think is right and wrong in this world . It also let's you think about how different is was back then than it is now. It makes you realize that this may be a free country but the social norm restricts you from doing things that other people may not appreciate. This book has also thought me that if believe strongly something you should pursue it with the best of your ability. I would refer this story to anyone who would like to know more about how life was different back then.

Hills Like White Elephants

Inthis story, a young couple ( whose names are unidentified except the girl's name which is Jig) Took a trip to the hills across the valley of Ebro. The girl and her husband decided to get a beer on such a hot day. As the girl sipped her beer, she looked out the window at the hills and thought they looked like white elephants. When her husband said he'd never seen one, she said he wouldn't have, and they began to argue. While they were arguing, the girl noticed a sign that said a new drink has been made. For a moment, they stopped arguing, and decided to try the new drink. After they finished their drink, they started another conversation about their life afterwards, but when the girl said they could have the whole world, her husband said they couldn't and said he just wants her to be happy. When the waitress came overhand said the train would be leaving in five minutes, the man bright the bags to the train station, while his wife sat there drinking her beer. When he came back and asked her if she was all right, she said she felt fine, absolutely fine.

"Barn Burning"

William Faulkner characters have different traits that affect each other. Two characters in the story are the boy and the father. The leader of the family is the father. He is strong, confident, vengeful, has conviction, and is independent. The boy is passive and a follower.

Abner was a man that looked for dominance over people because he's ruled over by De Spain since he's a sharecropper.
Abner is demanding because he said " did you put the cutter back in that straight stock like I told you? No sir, he said. Then go do it."He wants to be superior to others like the negro because he said "Get out of my way nigger",( 5 Faulkner ).He hates wealthy people because " the boy watched him pivot on the good leg and saw the stiff foot drag around the arc of the turning, leaving a final long fading streak", ( 5 Faulkner). The story says that the father burned the barn of the neighbor when the neighbor said that the father had to pay a fee for letting their hog in his land. Abner looks for vengeance because when De Spain said he should pay for the ruined rug he decided to burn De Spain's barn. Also before he dirtied the rug even though De Spain said he had to clean the rug he dirtied in the De Spain home.

The leader in the family was the father and the rest of the family were followers. The boy didn't stand up when his father was doing something wrong like burning the barn. When they moved to another place the boy felt terror and despair towards his father. He got slapped and was told that he needed to stick with his family or no one would stand up for him. The boy dreamed of living in happiness like the De Spain family. He hoped that he would live like that one day that everything would change and his father wouldn't look for vengeance but he didn't want to stand up to his father. He hoped because he thought,"Maybe he will feel it too. Maybe it will even change him now from what maybe he couldn't help but be." He thought that if he left the family he would never have to see his fathers face again. He was a pushover. Meanwhile the mother was also a follower she at least tried to stand up for what's right but was frightened and ended up sobbing in the end. She stood up by saying to the father that he shouldn't burn the barn of the De Spain family but the man just pushed her against the wall and she started sobbing. She ended up holding the small boy that was going to tell the De Spain man that his father was burning his barn.

Hills Like White Elephants

Hills Like White Elephants is a short story that tells us about a women named Jig,who is not sure about getting an abortion. The story tells us about this in a shadowy way.Anyways, after I read this story I thought this wasn't a very good text of literature. Hills Like White Elephants is not a very good piece of literature because it doesn't give us any character names in the story, so it was hard to understand when the author put, "the man" or "the girl."
Another reason why I think Hills Like White Elephants isn't a very good piece of literature is because it had too much dialogue in it.I found it hard to understand with so much dialogue because it didn't describe much things in the story. Other than that, I find Hills Like White Elephants a very good story for people that like to read shadowy stories.
A&P

This story starts out when a few girls enter a store wearing nothing but bathing suits. This brings a cashier attention named Sammy to fall in love with one of the girls he calls Queenie. She had oaky hair done up in a bun that was unravelling, and a kind of prim face. She held her neck up so high her neck, coming uop out of those white shoulders, looked kind of stretched, but Sammy didn't mind. The longer her neck was,the more of her there was. Everyday, Sammy became more and more attracted to her each day, until Thursday afternoon came.

Queenie came in wearing the same bathing suit when the manager comes out and tells her this isn't a beach and kindly asks her to leave. When she hears this she starts to get an attitude with him, but leaves anyway. Meanwile, Sammy is behind the cash register watching everything when he decides to impress her by quitting his job. So he walks up to the manager, tells him he quits, amd runs out the door, but when he turns around to see if the girls were paying any attention to him, they were already gone.

"What Means Switch"

I enjoy the short story, What Means Switch very much because it adds a touch of history into the story without making the ENTIRE story about history thats currently in the story "happening". Also, its shows how an Asian or Chinese girl can fit into society and be free. i believe so because Mona was always trying to impress people, but with Sherman, she could be the genuine Mona. Not, this fake Barbie doll version of Mona! Feeling something like this must be brilliant! I am not sure why Sherman flipped Mona at the end though?!?! Why would you just finish asking a girl to "marry you" and then go on and flip her. Even worse the flip was so hard that there was blood on the back of her head! And then just to leave, without a goodbye, as your leaving to Japan and you'll probably never see her again! What a shame?!?!

When he gets into his day dreams that's when everything changes. In all of them he is in control. In the first one he is a commander, in the second a surgeon, in the third he is a defendant, and in the last he is a captain. Notice in all he is the one calling the shots. The point is that in reality he doesn't want to be who he is, he wants to be in control not be controlled.

"The Lottery"

The story was about a town of people that did the lottery every year. The lottery is a game that has all the towns people play it. Every family has to be in the lottery. In the story a family called Hutchinson were picked for the lottery and the wife thought it was unfair that they were picked. The town didn't help her at all and when she was picked to be stoned. Her family and the towns people were throwing stones at her even her little child, Davy. No one stood up for her while she screamed for help. It's ironic that this happened. The actual meaning of the lottery was that you would win a lot of money. In this short story the town celebrated the lottery as someone getting picked to be stoned. You would think that the day of the lottery would be a good thing because the writer described the day as a hot sunny day. The lottery at that point is expected that the town is excited about. Then there was foreshadowing that maybe somethings wrong with the setting on how the men seem to avoid being next to the stones the children were piling up. Then the families backed away from the black sacred box. The evidence showed that they were nervous of the event and frightened.

During this time of which she is trying to find her identity she becomes confused when she is faced with a decision of either using the guy she loves to become popular which was her intent since the beginning or change her mind and just be with the guy she loves and not be sucked into the peer-pressure she has faced to be like her friends to become popular.

Irony in "The Most Dangerous Game"

In "The Most Dangerous Game", written by Richard Connell, there is irony. 0The irony started when Rainsford and Whitney were sailing to hunt animals. Rainsford said that hunting was the best sport in the world and Whitney replied that it was good for the hunter, but not the jaguar. They kept on talking and Rainsford said, "Who cares how a jaguar feels", and you can tell that Rainsford doesn't realizes what he is saying right now. Soon after he fell off the boat, and swam for a while then washed up on the beach of an island. He found a general named Zaroff who was also a hunter, but he hunted people who washed up on the beach. Zaroff challenged Rainsford to the hunt and told him if he did not accept Ivan (a very strong man who was almost eight feet tall) would beat him up. Rainsford accepted the challenge. The next day Zaroff gave him a head start and then began to chase him like an animal. During the hunt Rainsford's hand got hurt, but he still ended up killing Zaroff.

The irony displays that Rainsford did not care about the animals he hunted until he felt what it was like when he was hunted by Zaroff. Now he probably wont neglect the way animals feel when you kill the for game.

"The Interlopers"

In the short story "The Interlopers", it talked about how two men that had a long standing family feud about the owner of the close forest. Ulrich and Georg are hunting each other. Then Ulrich finds Georg during a storm. They stood in silence at first, each holding a rifle. Then the storm did its magic, a huge tree fell on them almost crushing the both of them. They still continue to argue, even when they're trapped under a tree. Ulrich manages to get a hold of his bottle of wine. He looks straight at Georg, bleeding all over the place. He offers, but out of his pride, Georg refuses. After that event, they start talking about how they should make peace between their two lands. They finally come to a agreement to make peace. They were still competitive. This time about who's men shall reach here first so they could announce the honor of the villages making peace. Later, they here something coming, they all think its one of their men. It turns out that it is wolves, and with a hideous cry out of fear, it ends. Its interesting that right after they made peace, their hatred still came back to bite them. if they forgot this whole feud earlier, they wouldn't of died.

What Means Switch

What Means Switch is a short story. This story was about a girl named Mona Chang that came from Yonkers. Mona is a new student, and she wants to be popular. She tries to impress people by saying cool things about China. For example, Mona says something that is very ridiculous, "Did you know people can get pregnant from tea bags in China?" Anyways, one day a new boy came from japan, and his name was Sherman. Mona had to show Sherman around the school, and the society he will be living in. As Sherman and Mona got to now one another better, they begin to express their feelings for one another.

At the end of the school year, Sherman learned how to speak English better, and he learned about the society he was living in.During the summer, Sherman told Mona that he will be going back to Japan in a couple of days. When that day came, Sherman and his parents arrived at Mona's house. When Mona's parent were in the house with Sherman's parents, Sherman told Mona to come to the side of the house with him. When they were at the side of the house, Sherman decided to kiss Mona. What they did at their age was a little inappropriate. Also, Mona got her wish: In the beginning of the story Mona said that she hopes she can get her first kiss like Barbra, in the end it happened, but it didn't finish off quite well. When Sherman finished kissing Mona he decided to flip her, and she hit her head on a rock, and it didn't seem like he cared. At the end of the story, Barbra asked Mona what happened, and Mona tried to explain to Barbra that she can't tell her because it's none of her business. The theme of this story is that people can't change what their race is, but they can always change the way they act or think about something!

Moods in "What Means Switch" by Gish Jen

In this short story, there is a lot of moods page by page. Why would there be different moods on one page? Well, this because everyone at every second changes their mood with each topic and what other people's opinions. In this "short" text, there is a lot of moods in each page. We'll start with page 118. On this page, it starts with Danielle Meyers, a girl who wears blue mascara and has gone steady with two boys at age 13. She is a popular girl who discusses about kissing those two boys. The main character, Mona, a Chinese girl, thinks she would have to kiss a boy to become popular girl in her new school. She had just moved from Yonkers into a town with mostly Jewish people. Then she goes on and explains us that you can get pregnant with green tea in China and she shows off by speaking in Chinese. Then she meets a Japanese boy named Sherman. She supports him though daily life in the United States. He gives her gifts and they begin to like each other. The mood here is love and gratitude. In the end of this wonderful text, he said that she cannot be Japanese person. So now that she doesn't like him.

What It Means To Switch"

Mona Chang is the protagonist in the story. She tries to find her spot in school because she was a new student. She perceives that being popular is fantastic since everyone paid attention to Danielle Meyers. So she decides to talk about her culture but lies and exaggerates the truth of her culture so it would interesting. Mona said that she knew karate when she didn't and she said that in old times Chinese people ate monkey brains instead of telling her friends about Chinese people eating tomatoes and that it was the Chinese specialty. She was confused on where she stood in junior high school. Mona was under peer pressure of Danielle. Danielle talks about French kissing someone and just kissing another person and Mona determines her self to kiss someone too but she didn't know how. But when Sherman came to the school as a exchange student, Mona became his guidance. She's sympathetic toward him even though it bothers her that he's trailing behind her like a shadow. Mona felt confused over her feelings about Sherman since she assumes that Sherman likes her so she's not sure if they are just close friends. Later in the story she finally realizes that she likes him.

What Means Switch

The story What Means Switch by Gish Jen, is about a Chinese girl name Mona Chang that is trying to fit in with the social people in her new school. She has difficult time telling the truth, and told lies that she knows karate because somebody was taking all the attention away from her.She also expresses about how you can get prenant from tea,and how chinese people eat monkey brain which isn't even their cultral food it's mostly tomatoes.
When a girl name Danielle Meyers, said that she had two boyfriends and she kissed them both, she got into peer presure and she was looking for a boyfriend too. Then a japanese boy name Sherman that enrolls to the same school. She offers to be his mentor in speaking and other things of such.At the end of the year Sherman moves and Mona ends up writing to him and he breaks up with her because he realizes that the whole reason of having him was for poplarity and she is heart broken.

The Most Dangerous Game

The Most Dangerous Game was an intriguing story. In fact my favorite part was when General Zaroff saw Rainsford in the tree and smiled. But he did not murder him; he let him "play the game" for a bit longer. I like this because it emphasizes a bit more spice, it shows that typical is boring. A weird part of the story was when Zaroff told Rainsford that he hunted not only animals. He hunted humans as well, the catch was that Rainsford was going to be the hunted. Rainsford felt comfortable with hunting animals until the day he "became the animal"! It was considered a game, to the General at least. Rainsford then thought of the general as a repulsive, disgusting, idiotic murderer! Rainsford went in hiding as part of "the game" and Zaroff "hunted" him. Rainsford seemed knowledgable or informed of his mentality of his AND Zaroff's whereabouts. Meaning he knew many things about "the game of hunting". Intriguing enough the short clip varies immensely from the short story.

The Most Dangerous Game

The Most Dangerous game is a long and creepy story. A man named Rainsford is always use to being the hunter and hunting other animals. He has never known what it feels like to be the hunted until his encounter with General Zaroff. Rainsford hears gunshots and he follows the sound where they are coming from. He goes outside and holds on to the rail, but he slips and falls off the boat and into the ocean. He decided to swim towards the island where he heard the gunshots(Ship Trap Island). There he meets General Zaroff and at first the General acts nice and welcoming. That is until he tells Rainsford about what he hunts. General Zaroff use to hunt animals, but he soon got tired of them. He said "Animals can't reason, they always live off of instinct. That's when he created a knew type of game, hunting humans(or The Most Dangerous Game). Rainsford says that this is murder but General Zaroff has made his own truth in believing that it's not. That's when the General tells Rainsford that he is apart of "The Most Dangerous Game." The General supplies Rainsford with clothing, food, and a knife. General Zaroff says "Go on, I don't start until the evening.

The hunt is on. Rainsford has set out and starts immediately setting a trail for the General to follow, but right after he turns around and tries very hard to not lo leave a trail behind. After doing this he climbs up a tree to hide and ends up staying there for the night. He falls asleep and when he wakes in the morning he hears General Zaroff approaching. He hides next to the limb on the tree when he saw General Zaroffs eyes gazing up the tree. General Zaroff stops looking just before the tree limb that Rainsford was on. The General smiles and walks away. Rainsford thought what he didn't want to think, General Zaroff was saving him for anothers day play. Rainsford was the mouse and General Zaroff was the cat. Rainsford jumps off a cliff and the General thinks that he has died, but he hasn't. Rainsford survives for the next three days and he wins, now he is waiting for the General in his room. General Zaroff finds Raiinsford in his room and gets challened to a fencing match. Whoever loses is food for the hounds and the winner gets to sleep in the fantastic bed. Rainsford decides that he had never slept in a better bed.

The Dangerous Game: Feedback

I read " The Dangerous Game" about 20 million times to analyze the text. Then, when we watched that 'bootleg' screenplay made by college students I thought, "What in the world." I'm my own right I could say that I am a PETA activist but who changes from killing animals to killing people? The general reminded me of Count Dracula, but in a eviler sense, all he needed was spiked black hair. The fighting scene by far just made me laugh out loud, it was hysterical I could make a better fighting scene than that and i'm 12!

In the sense of comparing the movie to the actual story, they were quite different. I always thought a movie based upon a story were both supposed to be similar, but in this case it wasn't. The only part that connected the story to the movie was when Rainsford is in a tree and the General finds him but doesn't acknowledge him, at this time he coudl assess the situation but he disregards it. He simply just smiles and walks away. I thought the author made a greeat literay choice in doing so because, it made continous questions pop into to my head: like why walk away, why didn't the general take him down right then and there...

The Most Dangerous Game

The Most Dangerous Game is a short story, but it is quite long! Even though the story was long it was very interesting, and the story was full of suspense. I would suggest that the story's mood is fearful and determined, because the general reveals that he hunts people. When people are being hunted by the general, they start to feel a rise of fear. The mood is determined because the general is persistent to catch Rainsford, and Rainsford is determined to be free. In the end,Rainsford was free because the general didn't catch him, and Rainsford decided to kill the general before he left the house. Also, Rainsford knew what it felt like to be a huntiee instead of a hunter, so he changed the way he thought about the animals he hunted.

The Dangerous Game

The Dangerous Game was about a man name Rainsford, that is stranded at a unknown island little does he knows that the island was bought for killing people for amusement of the owner ,General zaroff.General Zaroff, keeps on delaying his reason for buying the island until Rainsford sneaks out the room to see what, he was doing and at that moment,he saw him about to chop somebody up.After that he explained what he does and he told Rainsford that he was next to play with him. With the thought of that he was scared to his last breath. When he ran outside to hide, his hand got stuck in a trap,it was in so bad that he was forced to cut his arm off. With one arm he ran in the jungle, thinking of a way to trap him. Finally he made a trap, but it failed. When General Zaroff caught up with him,he was on a cliff.Just when he was about to pull the trigger Rainsford jumped. After that he observes the height of the cliff and General Zaroff determines that he was not going to come back. The next day to General Zaro surprise,he was alive and stabbing him with a sword. When he regained his strength ,he loosed the dogs on him, using his wit he tricked the dogs and he presume hiding.Just when he was about to fall asleep ,Rainsford appeared at his whindow and he reveals that General Zaroff loosed.

The Cask of Amontillado

"The Cask of Amontillado" written by Edgar Allan Poe is a very sad and crazy short story. The short story is about a man named Montresors, who wanted to get revenge on a person named Fortunato because he made fun of him. The thing that is crazy is that Montresors was not mad at Fortunato when Fortunato was beating him up, but the second Fortunato made fun of Montresors he got mad and started to plot his plan to get revenge on Fortunato. For years Montresors kept his plan secret. The way he kept the plan a secret was by smiling at Fortunato in an unsuspecting way so that he didn't think anything was wrong. Montresors planned to get Fortunato back by attacking Fortunato's weakness which was his love for wine. After the plan was finished, Montresors saw a chance to get at Fortunato while they were at the carnival because it was the carnival season. Montresors decided to take his best shot at Fortunato since he was already intoxicated. He tricked Fortunato into following him to his house to taste a new wine (named Amontillado) that Fortunato had never tasted. Montresors' house was empty because he told everyone not to be there at that time. Montresors and Fortunato explored deep into the catacombs (tombs) of the Montresors family. When they got down Fortunato started to cough. Montresors pretended to care that Fortunato was coughing so Montresors encouraged him to go back, but Fortunato wanted the wine so he demanded that they continue on. As they got to the middle Fortunato's cough got worse, again Montresors urged him to go back, but Fortunato said to continue. As they got close to the end Fortunato's cough got even worse so Montresors urged him to go back for the last time. When they reached the Amontillado Montresors gave Fortunato the wine. Fortunato became even more intoxicated. As he leaned against a rock straps unfolded off the rock and restrained Fortunato to the rock. Fortunato snapped out of his intoxication and realized what had happened then they talked about how great Montresors' plan was. After that Montresors started to block off the path to Fortunato with bricks. Fortunato started to laugh. From that day on no one knew what happened to Fortunato except Montresors.

The theme of the story demonstrates to be kind in word and deed also watch and pick your words carefully because you might hurt someone and you might not know it.

A Lot of Conflicts

In the short story "The Man to Send Rain Clouds", it had a lot of conflicts, both internal and external. When the priest had to ponder on which to bring the holy water to Terifilo's funeral showed and internal conflict, which is man vs self. The book also talked about how people keep their belief because Leon believed that Terifilo would need plenty of water. He wanted a Indian Burial instead of a Christian one. There is another conflict. External, man vs man because Leon had to convince the priest that the Christian Burial wasn't appropriate. This book was filled with them. Even though the book was very short, it still was interesting. This book also talked about the seasons because Terifilo died at the end of Winter, the next season is Spring, which the flowers and the other plants start to grow, and rain starts to come. So, they believe that Terifilo would send rain clouds from were he went after he died, hence the title "The Man to Send Rain Clouds".

"The Man to Send Rain Clouds"

"The Man to Send Rain Clouds" is a sad book. This book depicts a lot about Native American history. It identifies the rituals Native Americans do to get ready to bury one an other. For example in the book it say that the people wrapped the man in a red blanket when they found him under the tree in the sheep field. When the people brought him home they decided to redress him. Even after they redressed him they still choose to wrapped him back up that exact red blanket. The story also has a lot to do with religion. In the book the village wanted the man to have Native American burial, but the priest who was preforming the burial wanted a christian burial so hey both had to combine both burials. "The Man to Send Rain Clouds is a book about how the Native American beliefs and rituals differ from American beliefs.

" How to Read Literature Like a Professor"

For the past week or so my class and I have been reading a book called, " How to Read Literature Like a Professor." This week in, "How to Read Literature Like a Professor." we learned about literary geography and season. Literary geography is usually about humans inhabiting spaces, and at the same time the spaces that inhabit humans. For instance if the setting of the story was a child who lives in America in a rich neighborhood and then the setting was changed to a girl who lived in Africa in a poor neighborhood the child would act differently because the setting of the story changes the actions of the character in the story. Literary season is mainly about how certain seasons inspire certain emotions and events. For example winter=anger, hatred, and death and summer= passion and love. These are only a couple of examples but if you want to learn more about literary geography and season you should read the book, " How to Read Literature Like a Professor." By: Thomas C. Foster.

The Man Who Died

The short story The Man To Send Rain Clouds is a sad story. When Leon`s grandfather dies, Leon decides to have a traditional funeral. But the priest from the church they go to on Sunday, suggests that they have a big funeral mass. But Leon said no, and he chooses to have the priest to sprinkle some holy water on his grandfather, so he will not be thirsty. So now the priest changes his mind, and will do that for his friend, Teofilo even though he did not get the opportunity to throw a big funeral mass for him.

Religion Can Stop People From Saying the Whole Truth

The priest's religion is Catholic, while Leon's religion is Laguna -a native American religion.
Leon supports the belief that if a person dies they will send rain clouds as to give back to the earth. So when Teofilo, Leon's grandpa, died he and Ken needed to do a special ceremony so Teofilo could give back to the earth. They painted Teofilo's face with white, blue, and yellow streaks. Then they tied a feather to the man's hair and spread corn meal and pollen around the feather. After that Leon chooses to make Teofilo's burial a traditional Laguna funeral.
Teofilo was dressed in his best clothes and the new moccasins that Teofilo, himself made. This portrayed that Leon felt very strongly toward his beliefs. The funeral had some old men (their religion was Laguna) do a ceremony with candles and the medicines they used. Once the funeral ended the people attending the funeral embraced Teofilo's family and left food. Leon assuming that if the priest had been the one to prepare the funeral he would have made it a catholic funeral so he didn't tell the priest. Leon reasons that the priest would have said the Last Rites and sprinkled holy water over the body. It wasn't until the end of the funeral, when Louise desired to know if the priest could sprinkle some holy water over Teofilo's dead body, that he had to confront the priest. He found out that the priest would do the favor even though he would be breaking the ritual to be sprinkling holy water over a body and not saying the Last Rites.

The Cask Of Amontillado

I enjoyed the "Cask Of Amontillado" very much. I am quite fond of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. But the reason I enjoyed The "Cask Of Amontillado" is because the killer seemed like a person who had analyzed every thought or step that's going to be made. He seemed mysterious, just as Fortunato did. Though, the killer was quite alluring, Fortunato seewas more of a character that was interested in. Fortunato was irresponsible, unfocused, and demanding. I believe so because he got so drunk that he couldn't even comprehend what was happening to him and what he was getting himself into. He was unfocused because he could not focus on what was happening. Fortunao could only focus on Luchesi not being able to fulfill his purpose. Lastly, though the killer tricked him into coming along with him Fortunato seemed demanding. Before, I knew what was going on Fortunato was saying that basically no matter what, he was going with the killer. Whom he thought, was his "friend", but apparently he was the reason for his death.

SEARCHING FOR SUMMER

In this story, a young couple named Lily and Tom decide to go on a honeymoon in a sunny place after their wedding. Since this was a time when most places had no sunlight, people would laugh at the thought of the new married couple looking for a sunny place to spend their honeymoon at. Despite the negative comments, they still had plenty of hope. So they hopped on their scooter, and began their journey.

They rode down south keeping their eyes peeled for any bit of sun they could get, but when moments passed and they still couldn't find not even the dimmest bit of sunlight, they began to lose hope. To make it even more worse, the engine died on them. Luckily there was a garage up the road,so they pushed the bike to the garage and asked if there was a pub they could stay in. The man there told them that there was one pub in the village called the Rising Sun where Mr. Noakes could lend them a room. When a bus pulls up Mr. Noakes is in a grumpy mood, but when he heard the couple needed a place to stay, a wide grin stretched across his face. He led them up the street to the rising sun, and let them unpack. After they were done unpacking, they sat down and ate their baked beans. When they finish eating, Lily decides to go for a walk, because she accidently picked up the old lady's bag from the bus. When they arrived at Mrs. Hatchins house to return her bag, Lily hurt her foot and needed a bandage for her foot. While Mrs. Hatchins took care of Lily's foot, they had a cup of tea from there long walk when Mrs. Hatchin said how tired they must be from their long walk on this hot day. It was then and there when Tom and Lily looked out the window, and saw the gleaming sun for the very first time.

The mood in this story was very confident because even though their relative weren't very supportive, they never lost hope. This story has taught us that even the worst days can turn out to be the best and that we should never give up on our dreams.

"Searching for Summer"

I've read a short story called Searching for Summer . It took place in 1958, and it's about a lady named Lily, and a man named Tom. The mood of this story is exciting and devastating , because the newly married couple is on a quest because they said they were looking for sunlight. They are looking for sunlight because they want to spend their honeymoon in it. They didn't want to spend their honeymoon somewhere in their town because it was always cloudy and gloomy after the atom bomb was launched. Anyways, when Lily and Tom were on their quest, they met new people along the way. The story introduced us to Williams and Mrs. Hatching, by a great discription of them getting off a bus. Also the story told me that Williams , Mrs Hatching's son was blind. When the story told me that, the mood their was sad and appreiciative. I say the mood was appreiciative because it makes me appreciate that I have great eye sight! Also, we met another character, Mr. Noakes. The story told us that Mr. Noakes was a repulsive looking individual, he was a big, red faced man with wet, full lips, bulging pale gray blood-shot eyes, and greasy black hair.

Eventually, Lily and Tom finds sunlight, and is amazed how it is in one area. Lily and Tom found the sunlight because Mrs. Hatching dropped her purse and didn't realize it. So, Lily wanted to go and return it to her. When Lily and Tom went to return it to Mrs Hatching they decided to rest for a while because Lily's feet were soar from her wedding shoes. As they restd Tom and Lily realized that they found sunlight, and their mood turned from painful and fustrated to joyful and happy! Lily and Tom stayed at Mrs. hatching's house for three days, and decided to leave in the afternoon on the fourth day. When Lily and Tom went home they had a story to tell to their family, they could prove to their family that there is sunlight. From reading this short story I learned many things. I learned that a quest is to find self-knowledge, and I believe that Lily and Tom found self- knowledge.

"Searching for Summer"

"Searching for Summer" was a very short story but it was an amazing book to read. Tom, Lily, Mr.Noakes, and the old lady are the main characters. This story was about how Lily is getting married to Tom and she is wearing a yellow dress. Now, the reason I am pointing this yellow dress out is because in the eightie's people wore yellow dresses and believed in omes strongly, so if Lily were to find a but of daylight her married life would be blessed with sunshine. So after the wedding comes the honeymoon. So, Tom and Lily's quest is to find a bit of sunshine and spend the time there.
Tom and Lily are still "Searching for Summer" but can't find any daylight, so they have to stay at a hotel or a motel to stay for the night. Now the motel their staying at is Mr.Noakes's motel and Mr.Noakes is one greedy, selfish, and crazy guy. The book points out one paragraph describing Mr.Noakes and it says, " Mr.Noakes was a repulsing-looking indivisual, but when he heard that Tom and Lily wanted a room for the night, he changed completely and gave them a leer that was full of false goodwill. He was a big red-faced man with wet, full lips, bulging pale-gray bloodshot eyes, and a crop of stiff greasy black hair. He wore Tennis shoes." That to me was a very good description of the man.
When they settle in Lily would like to go for a walk with Tom, but she notices the old lady's bag is in front of her. So she goes up to the old lady's house in the back of the village and returns the bag. Now Lily is cold and frustrated that she still can't find any sunshine, and the shoes are starting to give her blisters. They finally arrive at the place and return the bag. When they are there the old lady realizes that they got married. So when they settle in and have some tea the old lady says, "There me dear. Now us'll have a cup of tea, eh? Proper thirsty you'm fare to be, walking all the way to here this hot day." Hot day? There's not a bit of sunshine, what is she talking about? But then Lily and Tom saw a sqaure of sunshine laying on the fireplace. Finally they have found sunshine!!!
That's basically what the story is about. The expereince of the characters caused me to recognize tones and moods in the course of reading the book. Mr.Noakes to me had a nasty feeling. Just imagine someone cursing incontrollably and being disrespectful. His mood was usual frustrated. Lily's mood changed along the course of the story. First she was very excited of getting married and had a hope of finding a bit of sunshine. But in the middle she lost faith of finding this sunshine and her mood was just loss of hope. You can just tell by the description she was sad and angry. Tom felt the same. In the book it still had many descriptions and it was very good book. Even though this book had the good and bad parts it was a really good book. Tom and Lily finally found summer!
In Searching For Summer the tone sounds depressing at first because it talks about bombs and how the sun never showes।But during there quest the honey moon couple faces a problem, she picks up a elderly lady's bag(or so she says),so they go into the woods to find out who's bag it is।on the way there when they return the bag to the लदी.While they ate they realize that they have saw light all the time, when they were on there quest. After that they were filled with joy and happiness because the fulfilled or finished their quest at last so now they can tell their children and pass the quest down for generations to come.
I think that this story sounds adventurous because in most part of the story it talks about how they are desperate for sunlight and to see new land,in which they did because they were so determined. It also talked about the history of bombs when it said whitish gray, day after, day, sometimes darkening to a weeping slate-color,or at the end of the evening, turning to smoky copper/the sky endlessly secretly brooded. That sentence describes what an outcome of a bomb can be,even after many days.A question that came to mind is why did they go on such a painful search because they were escaping and sick of their home and needed to find clean land?
When I read this short story I saw a lot of emotion, some of them you can feal such as when it said short-tempered with frustration, you can see that he is experianced. When the character goes through something you do to,it reflexs on the reader,it changes us in many ways, for an example you understand the characters better and what the author is trying to say(the meaning of the story). When the girl left the house she was still wearing her wedding sandals that means that she is connected to them because it remind her of her weding.

"Searching for Summer"

Searching for Summer is a very perplexing text. It seemed not to answer the questions that it asked it self, which at some points was very bewildering. To me "Searching for Summer" is the type of story that makes you ask yourself "why would they do that?" or "what did they intend on finding?". In "Searching for Summer" the moods of the story dependent on what the story is saying. For example the text says "The sun? Is it really the the sun?" which means that they were surprised that they finally saw the sun.
I think that this story was a good piece of literature. I think this because of its rich vocabulary and it's description of the characters. Also this texts makes people think out of the box in order to understand it. Not only is the story informative but it is also very interesting. Tom and Lily were Searching for Summer and they finally found it. This short story has taught me that every time i am on a quest to always keep trying because even when Tom and Lily faced the ups and downs they never gave up and found what they needed to find.

"Searching for Summer"

The story"Searching for Summer" is mostly about a man and woman named, Lily and Tom that are on a quest to fine sun shine. A bomb had went off and the smoke had never lifted. They had just been married and were going on there honeymoon. When on there ride they got stuck in a place that looked like the woods. Since they had no were to go the decided to stay at Mr. Noakes hotel. But when they got on the bus Lily noticed that Mrs. Hatching (the old woman) had left her bag back on the bus;but it was to late because they had left and was already out of sight. Lily insisted that she bring back Mrs.Hatching's bag.
On the next day Tom and Lily were heading off to Mrs.Hatching house to return her missing bag. Lily was wearing her wedding sandals while she was walking Lily noticed the her feet started to blister. They both got to the cottage which is where they returned the bag. Mrs.Hatching could not thank them enough. While William went to go pick some beans Lily and Tom came out to assist. Tom had taken off his shirt and-there it was, the sun shining on Toms back. An this is how Lily and Tom found sunshine and the answer to there quest.

The changing of the mood in "Searching for the sunlight"

The setting of "Searching for the summer", written by Joan Aiken, starts out with a depressing mood because in the short story they said, "It has was years since the bombs had been banned, but still the dark cloud never lifted." This explains that short story has a mysterious and depressing mood because you don't know what bombs were banned and at the same time its saying a huge ominous cloud has been straddling over the people in that area for years. That also may make you imply that there was a war where this story is taking place in, which is England. What also starts off the story in a mood depressing is that this woman named Lily is getting married to a man named Tom, and there wedding is outside, but there is on sunlight. Throughout the story the mood starts to build quest begins. the quest is about Tom and Lily going out on a scooter, and they start there search for sunlight. At first they were optimistic about searching for sunlight, but then they get into a more glad and more cheerful mood. The mood changed again because there scooter breaks down in Molesworth in font of the dimmest, drabbest, most insignificant huddle houses they have come to yet. That makes the mood mysterious again. After that they find an old lady they saw bag on the ground so they picked it up and went to take it to her. The way they found out how to get there is because at the place they were staying the person that own it Mr.Noakes told them the way. When they got to the old lady's house they talked for a while and she took them up stairs and there was a whole in the roof, and there was sunlight coming through the whole Tom and Lily where so lit with joy and happiness. That is the last time the mood changed and the mood end happy and satisfied.

The theme of the story coveys that you should never give up on what your doing.

"Searching for Summer" Characteristics About Lily and Tom

All the characters in "Searching for Summer" had different traits. Mr. Noakes was greedy and selfish. This is because when Tom and Lily first met the repulsive man he was cursing for the delay of two old people that were getting off the bus very slowly but when he found out that Tom and Lily were staying at his inn he turned into a false nice man. Another event is when he stated that if he found a patch of sunshine he'd use that patch so he could get money and make it into a country club,or a holiday camp, or a trailer site. Another reason that Mr.Noakes is greedy is because he once he saw that Lily and Tom had a suntan -when they came back to the village from the old lady's' cottage- he confims them that they found a patch of sunshine and then he demands them to tell him where the patch of sunshine was. Tom and Lily lied for the sake of keeping the patch of sunshine hidden from people like Mr.Noakes that would disturb its beauty and abuse it for their own use.
Lily on the other hand was caring and believed in myths. Lily wanted to find the patch of sunshine because she wore a yellow dress on her wedding day since it was said that it would bring a bit of sunshine in her marriage life. She really believed in myths because even though the journey made her feel really chilly she still wore her wedding things because it was said that it would bring good luck. Lily was at first optimistic in their journey of finding a patch of sunshine. But when Tom and her couldn't find a patch of sunshine Lily concludes ithat the journey is hopeless and lost all desire of finding the sun when she and Tom arrived to Molesworth village. So when they went to give the old lady her bag -which Lily suggests should be done because the old lady seemed so frail( she was caring)-she was in awe and doubtful when she felt the warmth of the sun and saw the blue sky at the old ladies cottage.

Searching For Summer - Good or Bad Literature?

I thought ''Searching for Summer'' possessed some terrific pieces for a reasonable piece of literature. In my opinion it was like a classic fairy tale , kind of like Cinderella but the whole story was reversed. Tom and Lily were married. but did not automatically live happily ever after. Their honeymoon contained distress everywhere, they met and I quote "a very repulsive looking man." Their bike was messed up on their way there while on the bus. and they had to leave it with a strange, mean, greedy Mr.Noakes but then, at the end their happily ever after came true when they finally saw a ray of sunlight.
My analysis on this piece of literature was more on the confusion side even though once you read through it a couple of times you begin to understand it. On the first page , fifth paragraph first the author uses personification on leaves and then right after that the family is talking. WHAT is that??? I assessed that part at least one hundred times and still I don't understand it. Who goes from leaves to a senior citizen...please explain this to me.

"Searching For Summer"

I felt that in "Searching For Summer" the author wanted for the readers to have to think hard and analyze the text. For example the author mentioned the banning of bombs. But the author didn't say why the bombs were bombed. He just basically said that the sunshine never came out ever since the bombs were thrown. So I think that its interesting how the author words things and lets the reader think instead of just giving it away.

My favorite part of the story was when the couple met the Hatching's. It was mysterious while being a happy part of the story. It was because it was mysterious how though William is or was blind but he found twice as many beans than the unvisually impaired people. Also it was happy because the couple finally found what they were looking for and brought joy to a very nice probably loely pair of elderly people.

SUNSHINE!!

"Searching for Summer" had a great mood. The mood made the story. It made the characters more interesting. The tone presented the feelings of the characters. The tone actually made me think about how the characters look. When they were sad, I could picture there face. The dialogue was so descriptive, it was like seeing the real thing.
The author did a great job with the story. It was very mysterious at first when we found out that there was no sunshine. I found it interesting how Mr.Noakes was greedy and not very encouraging . That was one of the obstacles the couple had to face on their "quest" to find sunshine. The Nuclear Bombs that made the sunshine disappear and made the grass brown. The author was speaking as if she was in the future of her time, were Atomic and Nuclear Bombs were something everyone was afraid of and still are now. At the end when they did find sunshine was a good moment. Even after all the pain and loss of hope, they still continued on their quest and succeeded to find the self-knowledge.

"Searching For Summer"

The mood in "Searching For Summer" is feeling depressed/miserable. I found my evidence because the book is mainly about a couple that just got married(Lily & Tom)couple that go on there honeymoon. While they are on their honeymoon, they are on a quest to "Search For Summer"(or the sun). The sun has been gone for about two years and there have been reported sightings of the sun in different places for limited times. Without the sun people have said things about the land like it's a gray, winter-ridden landscapes, dirt cheap, dump, and nothing is useful around here.
After finding all of this out, Lily & Tom begin to feel depressed, miserable, and lose hope. Their spirits are lifted up again when they do find the sun. Lily & Tom need a place to stay for the night and the only place they can is the Rising Sun Hotel. So they bring the scooter they were riding to a garage. When the owner of the garage tells them that Mr. Noakes owns the hotel, they coincidentally run into him when he gets off the bus. In front of Mr. Noakes is an old lady named Mrs. Hatching and her blind son William. Shes so caught up with her son hat she drops her hand bag and Lily notices it and picks it up after they have finished talking to Mr. Noakes and Mrs. Hatching is to far for her to go after. When Lily & Tom get to the Hotel and have baked beans Lily asks where Mrs. Hatching lives so she can bring her bag back to her. Mr. Noakes tells her but warns her that she shouldn't go at this time of night. Lily & Tom leave to bring it to her anyway.
Lily & Tom travel through the woods to find her house and just when they think they aren't going to find it, they do. They are invited into Mrs. Hatching's home and Mrs. Hatching begins to ask the a bunch of questions. One of those questions is "How did you walk all this way in this heat?" That's when they noticed it was the sun, it stood in that one place for all this time. Lily & Tom stood there for three days when they noticed that everyone might be looking for them. They thought about the image, the beautiful garden, with the bee's buzzing around. Lily & Tom didn't want anyone to come this way and ruin everything, so they left and they were satisfied with how they got to spend their honeymoon. Lily & Tom completed their goal in "Searching For Summer" which was to find summer(the sun).
