The Cask of Amontillado

"The Cask of Amontillado" written by Edgar Allan Poe is a very sad and crazy short story. The short story is about a man named Montresors, who wanted to get revenge on a person named Fortunato because he made fun of him. The thing that is crazy is that Montresors was not mad at Fortunato when Fortunato was beating him up, but the second Fortunato made fun of Montresors he got mad and started to plot his plan to get revenge on Fortunato. For years Montresors kept his plan secret. The way he kept the plan a secret was by smiling at Fortunato in an unsuspecting way so that he didn't think anything was wrong. Montresors planned to get Fortunato back by attacking Fortunato's weakness which was his love for wine. After the plan was finished, Montresors saw a chance to get at Fortunato while they were at the carnival because it was the carnival season. Montresors decided to take his best shot at Fortunato since he was already intoxicated. He tricked Fortunato into following him to his house to taste a new wine (named Amontillado) that Fortunato had never tasted. Montresors' house was empty because he told everyone not to be there at that time. Montresors and Fortunato explored deep into the catacombs (tombs) of the Montresors family. When they got down Fortunato started to cough. Montresors pretended to care that Fortunato was coughing so Montresors encouraged him to go back, but Fortunato wanted the wine so he demanded that they continue on. As they got to the middle Fortunato's cough got worse, again Montresors urged him to go back, but Fortunato said to continue. As they got close to the end Fortunato's cough got even worse so Montresors urged him to go back for the last time. When they reached the Amontillado Montresors gave Fortunato the wine. Fortunato became even more intoxicated. As he leaned against a rock straps unfolded off the rock and restrained Fortunato to the rock. Fortunato snapped out of his intoxication and realized what had happened then they talked about how great Montresors' plan was. After that Montresors started to block off the path to Fortunato with bricks. Fortunato started to laugh. From that day on no one knew what happened to Fortunato except Montresors.

The theme of the story demonstrates to be kind in word and deed also watch and pick your words carefully because you might hurt someone and you might not know it.
